A pool has two budgets. The build is the one everyone plans for. The second is what it costs to sanitize, heat, and close every year, and in Colorado that second number is shaped by altitude, dry air, and a real freeze.
This is what Front Range ownership actually involves.
Saltwater or chlorine
The first thing to clear up: a saltwater pool is a chlorine pool. A salt chlorine generator converts dissolved salt into chlorine on site instead of you adding it from a bucket. The sanitizer is the same, the delivery method is different.
Saltwater costs more upfront for the generator, then less month to month on chemicals. The water feels softer and is gentler on eyes and swimsuits, which is the reason most owners choose it. The tradeoff is the cell, a wear component that needs replacement every several years, and salt is mildly corrosive to some metals and natural stone, which is a material selection question at design time rather than a problem later.
Traditional chlorine is cheaper to install and simpler to service. You buy and add sanitizer, and you monitor levels more actively.
For most of the Front Range pools we build, saltwater is the default request, and the deciding factor is water feel rather than cost. Either choice needs the same routine water balance testing; Colorado's dry air drives evaporation, and evaporation concentrates everything left behind.
Heating and what it actually buys you
An unheated Front Range pool is comfortable roughly June through early September. That is a real season, and plenty of owners are happy with it.
Adding a heater generally extends usable swimming to about May through September. Adding an automatic cover on top of the heater is what pushes into October, because in Colorado the enemy is not daytime temperature, it is the overnight drop. Clear high-altitude nights pull heat out of an uncovered pool fast, and a heater without a cover spends much of its gas replacing what the night took.
That relationship is worth internalizing before choosing equipment: a cover is the highest-return efficiency purchase for a Colorado pool. It reduces heat loss, reduces evaporation, and reduces chemical consumption at the same time.
On the equipment side, a variable-speed pump running longer hours at lower speed uses meaningfully less electricity than a single-speed pump running hard for shorter cycles. It is a standard specification now, and it is the right one.
Winterizing is not optional here
Front Range freeze depth means closing a pool is a requirement, not a preference. Water left in a line freezes, expands, and splits it, and the repair is underground.
A proper close includes lowering the water level below the skimmer, blowing out and plugging return and suction lines, adding pool antifreeze where appropriate, draining the pump, filter, and heater, balancing chemistry so the water does not go destructive over the winter, and covering the pool.
Most owners have this done professionally the first year and many continue to. Opening in spring reverses the sequence and includes a startup that gets chemistry back in range before anyone swims.
Fiberglass shells have an advantage in a freeze climate: a smooth gelcoat surface has no plaster to acid wash and no grout lines, so seasonal maintenance is simpler year over year. That difference is part of the fiberglass vs concrete comparison.
Designing to lower the running cost
Some of the annual number is set during construction, not during ownership:
Automatic cover. The single biggest lever on both heating cost and evaporation. Decide during design, because retrofitting a cover into a finished deck is far more disruptive than building for it.
Variable-speed equipment. Standard on our builds.
Sizing the heater to the water, not the ambition. An oversized heater costs more to install and does not extend the season proportionally.
Wind exposure. Wind accelerates evaporation and heat loss. On exposed lots, a structure, wall, or planting on the prevailing side does real thermal work, not just visual work.
Deck material. A porcelain or paver deck stays cooler underfoot than dark poured concrete and can be lifted and reset if the ground moves. The options are covered in our pool deck materials guide.
Building the annual budget
Rather than quote a single figure that will not match your pool, budget by category: sanitation and chemicals, electricity for the pump, gas for heating if you have a heater, seasonal open and close service, and a reserve for wear items like the salt cell.
The two variables that move the total most are whether you heat and whether you cover. An unheated, covered pool is inexpensive to run. A heated, uncovered pool on an exposed lot is the opposite. Everything else is comparatively minor.
