Older Westminster patios often fail the same way, a thin slab poured over unprepared clay that heaved within a few freeze-thaw winters. When we rebuild, we start with the base: excavation to stable subgrade, compacted aggregate placed in lifts, and drainage that moves roof and surface water away from the new hardscape. On newer lots we more often start from bare dirt, laying out patio, fire feature, and planting zones as one plan instead of a string of piecemeal additions.
